This workshop addresses gender differences and similarities that both limit or free us, and the contribution and struggles of the changing social structures around gender and sexuality affecting us all. It helps bring understanding of how to support the child/adolescent in these times, and addresses questions and challenges that adults experience. We explore the anthroposophic understanding of being more than male and female, how to express evolving pictures of gender and sexuality to students in primary and secondary school, and the common struggles experienced during childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. Supporting this aspect of health and wellbeing of each child’s relationship to gender and sexuality results in greater resilience and confidence in their growing relationship to the wider community.

The evening is offered to parents in advance of meeting with the students. We look at the content that will be brought to Class 5, 6 & 7 bridging it to the pictures of human development on which the Steiner/Waldorf Curriculum is based. It helps to recognise the relevant depth and progression anthroposophy brings to this important aspect of life and the responsibility of community in raising children and working together to promote individual wellbeing. We address the main issues confronting child health and wellbeing in current times, with examples of how we can counter the unbalancing effects, and the social conditioning around gender that contributes to the struggles within out changing social structures.

The program content for children starts the year the child turns 11 years old, an age when the growth in the child’s body and soul develops towards puberty. The change of teeth, puberty, social understanding and cultural conditioning around gender stereotyping are the themes of the discussion. In Class 7 this extends towards the theme of attraction. Therefore Class 7 will have an extended time without the Class 6. The themes are typically built upon by an annual visit from facilitators which is extended and supported by the school staff with professional development courses, mentoring and online resources to connect it to main lessons.

What’s Freedom Got To Do With It? Exploring Identity, Sexuality and Gender July 19 - July 23

During this 5-day retreat we will explore gender, sexuality and social understanding through conversations, presentations, artistic experience, social time and quiet time. We will share our questions and experiences and learn from one another. We will explore the limits and liberties of gender, the complexity of attraction, and working with the masculine and feminine forces in each of us towards greater inner freedom. 

When: 19th-23rd July 2019 

Where: Mettabee Farm & Arts in Hillsdale, New York 

Accommodation: Participants bring and pitch their own camping tents; there are a few indoor spaces available on a needs basis. Three simple vegetarian meals will be provided each day 

Finances: Sliding Scale $150-250. You can send us post-dated checks leading up to the event or pay in full at registration. We have some scholarships available if needed.

This training will explore the contribution and struggles of the changing social structures around gender and sexuality affecting us all. It will help to bring an understanding of how to support the child/adolescent in these times and will also address some of the questions and challenges that adults experience. How can communities work together over time to support the harmonious development between the child’s evolving body and his or her inner experiences to build the foundation for healthy adult sexuality and gender? What is the responsibility and the impact of the community in fostering a sense of well being in the growing child in these important aspects of life? This workshop will help us to recognize the depth and progressive understanding Waldorf education brings to these topics. Children pass through different stages of consciousness as they grow. We will consider how and when to work with children in regards to sexuality and gender throughout the developmental stages of early childhood through adolescence. The emphasis will be on the the child from birth to seven.

Seeking Health: Exploring Questions of Gender, Sexuality, and Technology in Our Time

This weekend will focus on how to support and elicit the true nature of the individual human being from childhood to adulthood. We will explore the need for new community responsibility in providing young people with guidance and encouragement in their growing sense of self-consciousness: in essence, the need to develop modern rites of passage. We will consider questions around the role, influence, and stigma of technology, gender and sexuality, and mental health, both in our daily lives and in the long-term. Finally, we will look at how young people can be respected and encouraged by their greater communities in choosing a healthful path into adulthood.

It will cover how and when we work with children and adolescents to bring the understanding of sexuality and gender in relation to where they are in their consciousness. This brings harmony between the evolving body and inner experiences that sets the ground for healthy adult experience. The talk will cover some of the main issues confronting child health and wellbeing in current times, with examples of how we can counter the unbalancing effects. We also address how to understand gender differences and similarities that both limit or free us and the contribution and struggles of the changing social structures around gender and sexuality affecting us all.

Lisa Romero lives in Australia and is an author, a complementary health practitioner and an adult educator who has been offering healthcare and education enriched with anthroposophy since 1993. Since 1999 she has been presenting on the subject of gender, sexuality and spiritual life. She has been working with Waldorf Schools as part of their health and well-being curriculum, working directly with the students, teachers and parents on this theme. Lisa has contributed to and is an adviser on Health and Personal Development for the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework. She has developed training courses, and facilitates professional development on this subject for teachers and health professionals.
